Converging Trends: The Shift Age, Network Marketing and Mobile

If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.
— Richard Branson

To be successful with any business venture, it is important to take the temperature of the current economy and understand all the trends happening around you.

Getting on an airplane last night for a red eye back to Boston, it struck me that every single person in every single aisle was glued to their cell phone. They were playing games, checking email, texting, looking at FB (I think one of them was even making a phone call).  Then going to the bar last night, I walked by a table where a young couple was out to dinner – both of whom were on their cell phones.  In 2014, Adult mobile usage was 2 hours 51 minutes each day, surpassing desktop usage for the first time.  What is even more interesting is that in the 19-22 year old demo, that number climbs to over 4 hours.  Globally, by 2016 there will be over 2B smartphones. If you include feature phones the number is even higher.  Mobile has truly become the most important medium for everything from texting your friends to booking a cab - from placing calls to booking that last minute hotel room.

"In 2015 Uber, the world’s largest taxi company owns no vehicles, Facebook the world’s most popular media owner creates no content, Alibaba the most valuable retailer has no inventory, and Airbnb the world’s largest accommodation provider owns no real estate.”  -  startupvideo.net

With the proliferation of the smartphone and our connectedness to one another as well as various products and services, we have moved from the information age to the shift age. That is, our wealth that was once created from technological innovation is now created through intellectual property. Here is a good, quick video on this trend

Wealth is no longer created by hard assets.  You can build large global, multi-billion dollar businesses a la Uber without buying a single taxi.  This could not exist without the smartphone – without everyone on that airplane glued to their screens, downloading their application and booking a cab with a few clicks of the screen.

With mobile acting as the precursor and accelerant of the shift age, network marketing is in a position to become an even more powerful form of entrepreneurship. You can now instantly contact and build your team wherever you are. 95% of people read text messages within 2 minutes – people love this form of communication.  You can distribute materials to help educate, inform and prep your entire team instantly. Some companies, like Isagenix, also have their own app. This app allows for real time monitoring of team performance, revenue, product updates, etc.  The app will also prompt you with recommendations on how best to support your team, as well as letting you know when you are close to another milestone.

The shift age teaches us that wealth is now created through intellectual property – the ability to build businesses without hard assets. Network marketing can be a medium to achieve your personal wealth growth without the need to spend thousands if not tens of thousands on infrastructure. For the price of a couple car payments you can build a million dollar business.

The question that ultimately gets asked is – what to look for in evaluating a network marketing company?  You want a company that understands the importance of mobile and has the right mobile tools to nurture your success.
